The big idea

Being the church is less about what we know and more about what we show — the gospel has to move from our heads into our hands and feet.

The church is not a building we attend but a people who carry Jesus into every room we enter. Pastor Brad shows from Philippians 2 that in a divided culture, the church proves its knowledge of Christ by showing unity, love, community, and servant leadership rather than just knowing Bible facts.

Pastor Brad opens by distinguishing going to church from being the church, arguing that a lot of people know a lot of Bible but don't live it, while others know little Bible but look like Jesus every day. He frames the whole message around moving from intellectual knowledge to visible action.

Pastor Brad walks through Philippians 2:1-4, noting that 'therefore' points back to chapter one's call to live worthy of the gospel. He reads Paul's appeal to be like-minded, humble, and focused on others' interests as the practical how-to for showing the kingdom of God in every room.

Pastor Brad says believers are united in Christ but were never meant to be identical, and that unity is possible within diversity because it's rooted in following Christ rather than shared feelings. He recalls church people fighting over carpet color and Bible translations while the enemy went unchallenged, and retells Matthew 16's Caesarea Philippi scene to show the devil can't destroy the church so he instead divides it.

Drawing on 1 Corinthians 13, Pastor Brad says knowledge or gifts without love are just noise the world tunes out, but love is the currency that opens the door to being heard. He tells the story of accidentally trying to start his wife's Explorer with his son-in-law's key to illustrate that people won't respond until they know you love them more than you hate their decisions.

Pastor Brad describes the need for friends who know the good, the bad, and the ugly and still love you, warning that the devil isolates before he devastates, like a lion picking off a gazelle that strays from the herd. He cites Proverbs on iron sharpening iron and points to his own friendship with Pastor Lynn as an example of a friend who tells him the truth because he cares.

Pastor Brad tells stories from his teenage chores at home to show that being part of a family means picking up responsibilities rather than demanding rights. He connects this to Philippians 2:5-8, where Christ emptied Himself and took the form of a servant, arguing believers are never more like Jesus than when they give and serve.
