Key points
1God's plan often isn't visible looking forward, only looking back
Pastor TJ tells the story of shattering his growth plate skateboarding a month after becoming a Christian, which ruined his summer plans but led to his grandmother teaching him cards and Bible reading during recovery. His grandmother's saying, that God's plan isn't clear through the front windshield but becomes clear in the rearview mirror, framed the whole message and returned at the end tied to her funeral.
2Esther is set in a real historical context and should be read in that context, not read back through our own current events
Pastor TJ walks through the backstory of Esther: the Babylonian captivity era, the Persian Empire, King Xerxes, the Jewish exiles, and cautions against reading modern Iran headlines into the ancient text. He introduces the four characters — Esther, Mordecai, Xerxes, and Haman — and the plot of the king's drunken banquet, his rejected queen, and the empire-wide beauty pageant that elevates Esther.
God's plan isn't always clear looking through the front windshield, but it becomes clear when you look in the rearview mirror
3Haman's plot to destroy the Jews puts Esther and Mordecai in mortal danger despite their high position
He explains how Haman manipulates the drunk king into decreeing the annihilation of all Jews in eleven months, unknowingly signing his own queen's death warrant. This sets up the crisis in Esther chapter 4 where Mordecai urges Esther to approach the king.
4God powerfully uses those who step past their hesitation
Pastor TJ highlights Esther's fear of approaching the king uninvited, a capital offense, and Mordecai's insistence that she act anyway. He applies this directly to the congregation, urging them to name the thing God has called them to do and ask why not now instead of delaying.
God powerfully uses those who step past their hesitation
God doesn't need you. His splendor, his glory, his honor is better than you
5God's faithfulness and goodness are not dependent on our faithfulness or goodness
Working through Mordecai's words that deliverance will come from another place even if Esther stays silent, Pastor TJ teaches that God doesn't play a give-and-get game with us and that no one can buy His favor. He contrasts this with the thief on the cross, who did nothing to earn entry into paradise yet was welcomed by Jesus.
The only thing you're delaying is your blessing
6Esther's willingness to die for her people points forward to Jesus
He reads Esther's resolve, if I perish, I perish, as an echo of Jesus in the garden praying not my will but Yours be done, arguing that every Old Testament story is an arrow pointing to the cross. He illustrates this pattern with a string of popular movies (Saving Private Ryan, The Matrix, Braveheart, Gladiator, Titanic, Avengers: Endgame) where a hero sacrifices himself to save others, calling them echoes of the gospel.
And if I perish, I perish
7God's name is absent from Esther, yet He is fully present and active
Pastor TJ notes Esther is the only book in the Bible that never mentions God's name, and argues this proves God doesn't need His name invoked to be moving, saving, and creating. He ties this back to the question of divine silence, showing silence is not the same as absence.
Because God's name doesn't need to be mentioned for him to be present and active. He's not a genie that we say his name and then things happen. He's always moving
A story from life
The preacher tells of a difficult youth camp he led and two boys, Jorge and Nathan, who publicly grieved absent fathers at the closing campfire
8Hard seasons are building us for God's glory and will become a testimony
He tells the story of a disastrous youth camp where he had to fire a cook and felt God was completely silent, only to see two boys, Jorge and Nathan — both grieving absent fathers, one through addiction and one through suicide — comfort each other by the fire on the last night. He presents this as proof that God was orchestrating good even when nothing seemed to be happening.

A story from life
The preacher recounts breaking his ankle skateboarding as a new believer and the summer he spent playing cards and reading the Bible with his grandmother
Application
Pastor TJ frames the charge as one question to sit with: why not now?
Name the thing God has called you to do
Write down one word only you and God understand, the thing you've delayed but not disobeyed, and next to it write 'why not now.'
Step past your hesitation
Stop delaying obedience out of fear; recognize God doesn't need you to act, but He wants you in on what He's doing, and delaying only costs you the blessing.
Stop playing the give-and-get game with God
Let go of the belief that your faithfulness earns God's goodness; rest instead in the completed work of Jesus, the only basis on which anyone is let into His kingdom.
Lean into hardship instead of resisting it
When trials feel painful or confusing, trust they are building you for God's glory and will become a testimony that encourages others in their own struggles.
Take it into your week
