Big Idea

If you live your life as an owner you will always lose, but if you live your life as a manager who knows everything is on loan from God, you are guaranteed to win.

Everything in your hands — your life, your time, your talents, your money — is not yours; it was entrusted to you by God and ownership never passed to you. The hopeful truth is that when we live as faithful managers instead of owners, God blesses us beyond whatever we give back, and one day we get to hear Him say, well done.

Key points

1
1The rich fool in Luke 12 lived as an owner, and Jesus called him a fool for it.
Pastor Linn walks through the parable of the rich fool, whose land yielded such a harvest that he tore down his barns to build bigger ones and told himself to take life easy. He never once asked why God had given him the abundance or what God hoped he'd do with it, because he was certain it was all his. God calls him a fool because that very night his life was demanded of him, and none of the pile did him any good.
2
2Playing life like an owner is playing the game the wrong way, because everything goes back in the box.
Using the board game The Game of Life, Pastor Linn points out that whoever ends the game with the biggest pile of wealth only has an illusion of winning, because it all gets sold off and returned to the box at the end. Living to accumulate the biggest house, car, or pile leaves a person no better off when they die than when they were born.
3
3In the parable of the faithful servant, ownership of the bags of gold never passes to the servants — it's on loan.
Working through Matthew 25:14-19, Pastor Linn identifies the master as God, the servants as us, and the bags of gold as everything God places in our hands: life, time, talents, and finances. Two servants invested what they were given and doubled it, while one buried his, but the passage still calls it his master's money — proof that ownership never transferred.
4
4One day every one of us will settle accounts with God over what we did with what He loaned us.
Pastor Linn describes the master returning to settle accounts with the two faithful servants, who are told well done, good and faithful servant, and entrusted with even more. He frames this as a coming appointment where God will ask what we did with the life, time, talents, and finances He let us borrow.
5
5The servant who buried his one bag of gold reveals three things we all struggle with: forgetting God's collaboration, comparison, and distrust of God's heart.
Pastor Linn unpacks the third servant's excuse — that the master is a hard man who reaps where he didn't sow — and imagines God answering that He provided the soil, the rain, the strength, and even whispered in the interviewer's ear. He suggests the servant given the least struggled most because of comparison to the other servants, and ultimately because he didn't trust that God's heart toward him was good.
6
6Faithfulness with what God has given leads to being entrusted with more.
Pastor Linn notes that both faithful servants who doubled their bags of gold were given charge of more, showing that had the third servant been faithful with even his one bag, God would have given him more too. He ties this to the promise that God blesses whoever is faithful with what they already have, whether or not it's money.

Application

Pastor Linn's challenge is to swap the owner's mindset for a manager's, asking God directly what He wants done with what He's loaned you.

Pray the seven-day manager prayer
For the next seven days, ask God what He wants you to do with your life, your time, your talents, and your finances, even if the answer scares you a little.
Stop treating what's in your hand as yours
Recognize that your life, time, talents, and money are on loan from God rather than possessions you've earned and own outright.
Leverage a portion of what you have for the kingdom
Whatever God has entrusted to you, take part of it and use it for His glory rather than keeping all of it for yourself.
Trust the heart of God enough to give back
Let go of comparison and fear that God is a hard master, trusting instead that He will bless you beyond whatever you sacrifice to Him.

Day 1

Pastor Linn opened with a picture that lingers: a man with a bumper crop, tearing down barns to build bigger ones, telling himself to relax, eat, drink, and be merry. He had it all figured out — except that God called him a fool, because his life would be demanded that very night. What struck Pastor Linn most was the question the man never asked. He never wondered why God gave him such a harvest or what God might want him to do with it. He simply assumed it was all his. That assumption is easy to slip into. When the paycheck clears or the plan comes together, something in us quietly whispers, "I earned this. It's mine." Pastor Linn compared it to The Game of Life — you can win the whole board, and at the end all your carefully stacked wealth just goes back in the box. You're no better off for having won. The invitation this week isn't guilt over what you have. It's a gentler, more honest question: what if none of it was ever meant to be hoarded? What if it was all a gift, waiting for you to ask the Giver what He had in mind?

For reflection

Where have I quietly assumed something in my life is simply 'mine' without ever asking God about it?

Pray

Pray for honesty about where you've been living like an owner instead of asking the Giver.

Day 2

Today Pastor Linn turned to a very different man than the rich fool — a master heading out on a journey, entrusting his wealth to his servants before he goes. In this parable, Pastor Linn explained, the master is God, the servants are us, and the bags of gold represent everything God places in our hands: our life, our time, our talents, our finances. Notice what the master expects. He doesn't hand out the gold and walk away with no interest in what happens next. He entrusts it, then travels, fully expecting an account when he returns. And here's the detail Pastor Linn wouldn't let us miss: at no point does ownership pass from the master to the servants. The gold is still his. The servants are managers, not owners — stewards of something that was never theirs to begin with. That reframes everything. If I'm an owner, my possessions are a scoreboard. If I'm a manager, they're a trust. One breeds anxiety and grip; the other breeds freedom and purpose. Before you ask what God wants you to do with anything, it helps to settle whose it was all along. Today, sit with that quiet, clarifying truth.

For reflection

If I truly saw myself as a manager rather than an owner, what would I stop clutching so tightly?

Pray

Pray for the freedom that comes from remembering it was never yours to hold.

Day 3

Pastor Linn walked through the categories one at a time, and he started with the most personal one: your life itself. "Don't you know that you don't belong to yourself?" Paul asks. "You were bought with a price." That's a startling sentence in a culture that treats self-ownership as the highest good. We're told we belong to ourselves, that our lives are ours to spend as we please. Scripture says something both humbler and far more freeing: you were bought, and you belong to the One who paid. Pastor Linn pointed out this isn't only about money or talents — it starts with the life you woke up in this morning. Your breath, your years, your very self are on loan. That can sound heavy until you remember who holds the loan. The One who bought you at the cost of His Son isn't a distant creditor calling in a debt. He's a good Father who paid dearly because He wanted you. Belonging to Him isn't a loss of freedom; it's the discovery of what your life was actually for. Before this week's questions about time and talents and money, there's this foundation: your life is His, and that is good news.

For reflection

What changes in how I spend today if I really believe my life belongs to the One who bought it?

Pray

Pray for a grateful heart toward the One who bought your life at such a cost.

Day 4

"After a long time the master of those servants returned..." Pastor Linn described this return as an appointment every one of us has on the calendar, whether we've marked it or not. The master comes back and settles accounts, asking each servant what they did with what he entrusted. To the two who invested, he says the words we all long to hear: "Well done, good and faithful servant." And then something surprising — they're not handed a hammock. They're entrusted with more, invited into their master's joy and into greater responsibility. Pastor Linn noted that even heaven involves ongoing, purposeful work, not passive rest. That reframes the whole idea of a future accounting. It's not a courtroom to be dreaded so much as a homecoming to be lived toward. The question isn't whether you'll be perfect with what God loaned you; it's whether you invested it or buried it. And the reward for faithfulness is more of the very thing that gives life meaning: purpose, trust, and nearness to the Master. Living with that day in view isn't morbid. It's clarifying. It helps you spend today on what will still matter when you finally stand face to face and hear how He responds.

For reflection

If my appointment with God were tomorrow, what would I most want to be able to say I did with what He loaned me?

Pray

Pray for grace to live today with your homecoming with God in view.

Day 5

The third servant is the one who makes us squirm, because his excuse sounds so reasonable. He buried his bag of gold and explained himself: "I knew you were a hard man, harvesting where you had not planted." Pastor Linn pulled back the layers of that excuse and found reasons that live in us too. There's pride — the quiet belief that our success is entirely our own doing, when in truth God was present in every step we now take credit for. There's comparison — the sting of "that guy got five bags and I got one measly bag," which can freeze us before we ever begin. And beneath both is distrust of God's heart, a suspicion that He's harder and stingier than He really is. Notice: the servant's problem wasn't that he had too little. It was what he believed about the Master. Fear talked him out of faithfulness. If you've ever buried an ability, a resource, or a calling because it felt too small to matter or because someone else clearly has more, be gentle with yourself — and then be honest. Pastor Linn reminded us that faithfulness with little is how we're entrusted with more. God's heart toward you is better than your fear suspects.

For reflection

Is there something I've 'buried' — an ability, a resource, a calling — out of fear or comparison?

Pray

Pray for trust that God's heart toward you is far kinder than your fear assumes.

Day 6

Related passage

Pastor Linn's challenge to the church was simple but searching: for seven days, ask God directly what He wants you to do with your life, your time, your talents, and your finances. Not vaguely, but specifically. And he added a warning that doubles as an encouragement — if the answer scares you a little, that's often a sign it's genuinely from God, because God tends to do His best work on the other side of our fear. He pointed to David walking toward Goliath, saying, "You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of Heaven's Armies" (NLT). David wasn't fearless because Goliath was small; he was faithful because he knew whose battle it was. That's the posture behind this week's question. Maybe what surfaces for you is being a more present parent or spouse, serving somewhere specific, using an ability you've been hiding, or investing something in the kingdom. Whatever it is, if it makes your stomach tighten a little, don't automatically write it off. That tightening might be the edge of the very thing God wants to do through you. Take the question seriously today, and then take the next step toward the giant, not away from it.

For reflection

What has surfaced this week that scares me a little — and what would one faithful step toward it look like?

Pray

Pray for courage to move toward, not away from, the thing that scares you a little.

Day 7

The week is ending, but the real question begins tomorrow — in the ordinary Monday, the commute, the inbox, the dinner table. Pastor Linn framed the whole choice as one every listener has to answer for themselves: keep living like an owner, holding tightly to what you assume is yours, or start living like a manager who trusts that God's heart is good and that whatever is given back to Him will be blessed far beyond the sacrifice. That choice doesn't get made in a grand moment. It gets made in a hundred small ones this coming week. It looks like actually asking God before you fill your calendar. It looks like offering an ability instead of hiding it. It looks like loosening your grip on something you've called yours. You won't do this perfectly, and that isn't the point — the two faithful servants weren't flawless investors, just servants who refused to bury what they'd been given. So as tomorrow starts, don't try to answer the whole week's questions at once. Pick one place — life, time, talents, or finances — and manage it, this week, as if it belongs to God. Because it does. And His heart toward what you return to Him is good.

For reflection

In the week ahead, which one area — my life, time, talents, or finances — will I begin managing as God's rather than mine?

Pray

Pray for one concrete way to live as a manager, not an owner, in the week that starts tomorrow.

Discussion questions

1
Read Luke 12:15-21 aloud together. What do you notice about the way the rich man talks and plans in these verses?
2
Pastor Linn pointed out that the rich man never asked why God gave him the harvest or what God wanted done with it. Why might someone skip those questions when good things come their way?
3
In the parable of the bags of gold, the master hands his wealth to the servants before leaving on a journey. What does it change about how we see our lives, time, talents, and money when ownership stays with the master the whole time?
4
When the third servant explains why he buried his one bag, he says he was afraid and saw the master as harsh. How do fear, comparison, and distrust of God's heart tend to keep people from investing what they've been given?
5
The two faithful servants hear 'well done' and are entrusted with more. What does this picture suggest about the kind of accounting the sermon says every person will one day have with God?
6
Pastor Linn's challenge was to spend seven days asking God specifically what He wants done with our lives, time, talents, and finances — and he said a slightly scary answer is often a sign it's genuinely from God. How might we encourage one another to take that kind of question to God this week?

Pray together

Trusting that God's heart is good, and asking Him for open hands to manage well what He has entrusted to us.
