Big Idea

Being the church is less about what we know and more about what we show — the gospel has to move from our heads into our hands and feet.

The church is not a building we attend but a people who carry Jesus into every room we enter. Pastor Brad shows from Philippians 2 that in a divided culture, the church proves its knowledge of Christ by showing unity, love, community, and servant leadership rather than just knowing Bible facts.

Key points

1
1Being the church is about what we show, not just what we know
Pastor Brad opens by distinguishing going to church from being the church, arguing that a lot of people know a lot of Bible but don't live it, while others know little Bible but look like Jesus every day. He frames the whole message around moving from intellectual knowledge to visible action.
2
2Paul's charge in Philippians 2 is a prescription for a divided church to live worthy of the gospel
Pastor Brad walks through Philippians 2:1-4, noting that 'therefore' points back to chapter one's call to live worthy of the gospel. He reads Paul's appeal to be like-minded, humble, and focused on others' interests as the practical how-to for showing the kingdom of God in every room.
3
3The church needs unity, not uniformity
Pastor Brad says believers are united in Christ but were never meant to be identical, and that unity is possible within diversity because it's rooted in following Christ rather than shared feelings. He recalls church people fighting over carpet color and Bible translations while the enemy went unchallenged, and retells Matthew 16's Caesarea Philippi scene to show the devil can't destroy the church so he instead divides it.
4
4The church needs real, sacrificial love, not noise
Drawing on 1 Corinthians 13, Pastor Brad says knowledge or gifts without love are just noise the world tunes out, but love is the currency that opens the door to being heard. He tells the story of accidentally trying to start his wife's Explorer with his son-in-law's key to illustrate that people won't respond until they know you love them more than you hate their decisions.
5
5The church needs deep spirited community, not isolation
Pastor Brad describes the need for friends who know the good, the bad, and the ugly and still love you, warning that the devil isolates before he devastates, like a lion picking off a gazelle that strays from the herd. He cites Proverbs on iron sharpening iron and points to his own friendship with Pastor Lynn as an example of a friend who tells him the truth because he cares.
6
6The church needs servant leadership, not selfish ambition
Pastor Brad tells stories from his teenage chores at home to show that being part of a family means picking up responsibilities rather than demanding rights. He connects this to Philippians 2:5-8, where Christ emptied Himself and took the form of a servant, arguing believers are never more like Jesus than when they give and serve.

Application

Pastor Brad's charge is to move from what we know to what we show, starting today wherever we go.

Pursue unity, not uniformity
Stop fighting over things like carpet color or Bible translations and instead find common ground at the foot of the cross with fellow believers who don't look or think like you.
Love people enough to tell them the truth
Let people know you love them more than you hate their decisions, so love becomes the key that opens the door to hard, honest conversations.
Get into real community
Find deep spirited friends who know the good, the bad, and the ugly about you and still love you rather than staying isolated or merely attending events.
Pick up your responsibilities and serve
Like a family member who takes out the trash without being asked twice, take on the humble, unnoticed tasks of church life instead of pushing for position.
Take your light into the dark places starting today
Ask whether there would be enough evidence to convict you of following Jesus, and if not, begin showing it tomorrow at work, in your car, wherever you go.

Day 1

Pastor Brad opened by reminding us that the church is not a building we drive to on Sunday but a people who carry Christ into every space. Paul's words in Philippians 2 are stacked with "if" statements—if any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from His love, if any tenderness and compassion. Paul isn't wondering whether these things are real; he's saying, because they are real, let them show. His joy is made complete when we are like-minded, sharing the same love, united in spirit. That is not a private feeling. It is meant to spill into how we treat the person in the next cubicle, the next lane, the next checkout line. The sermon put it plainly: being the church is more about what we show than what we know. It's easy to accumulate knowledge of Scripture and never let it change a single interaction. Today is an invitation to notice the gap between the two—not with guilt, but with honest hope. The comfort and love we've received from Christ were never meant to stay locked inside us. They were meant to move.

For reflection

Where did I carry Christ into an ordinary room this week—and where did I leave Him at the door?

Pray

Ask God to show you one ordinary space this week where His love in you could become visible.

Day 2

"How wonderful and pleasant it is when brothers live together in harmony!" The sermon drew a careful distinction here: the church is called to unity, not uniformity. Those are not the same thing. Uniformity says everyone must look, vote, and think alike. Unity says we find common ground at the foot of the cross even when we are wildly different. In a divided culture, that is a countercultural witness. Pastor Brad reminded us that the ground is level there—no one arrives at the cross more qualified than anyone else. Our diversity isn't the problem to be solved; our division is. Real harmony doesn't require erasing differences. It requires a shared center strong enough to hold different people together. That's harder than agreement and far more beautiful. It asks me to stay in the room with a fellow believer I disagree with, to assume the best rather than the worst, and to remember what unites us is bigger than what sorts us. This is where growing in community begins—not with people just like me, but with people held by the same Savior.

For reflection

Is there a fellow believer I've quietly distanced myself from over a difference that isn't the gospel?

Pray

Pray for humility to pursue unity with someone you've been tempted to write off.

Day 3

Paul lays out an almost dizzying list of spiritual accomplishments—speaking in the tongues of angels, understanding all mysteries, faith to move mountains, even giving everything to the poor—and then says without love, it all amounts to nothing. A noisy gong. A clanging cymbal. The sermon called love the currency that opens the door for truth to be heard. That reframes everything. We often think our job is to be right, to have the correct answer ready. But Paul says knowledge without love is just noise. People don't first ask whether we're right; they ask whether we care. This is real agape love—sacrificial, patient, willing to be inconvenienced. It's the kind of love Jesus said would mark His disciples: "They'll know you're my disciples because you have love for each other." Loving people this way sometimes means telling them hard truths, but the sermon was clear about the order: love earns the hearing. If I skip straight to correction without the currency of love, I'm just making noise. Today, consider whether the people around you experience your faith as care or as clanging.

For reflection

Who in my life needs to feel genuinely loved by me before they'd ever want to hear what I believe?

Pray

Ask the Spirit to grow a real, sacrificial love in you for one specific person.

Day 4

"As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend." The sermon called these "deep-spirited friends"—people who know the good, the bad, and the ugly about us and love us anyway. Iron sharpening iron isn't a gentle process. It involves friction, heat, and honesty. That's why so many of us settle for shallow friendships instead: they cost less. But shallow friendships can't sharpen us, and they can't protect us. Pastor Brad made a sobering observation—isolation, not the enemy's direct frontal assault, is often what precedes devastation. We were never meant to walk this out alone. Real community requires letting a few people close enough to see what we'd rather hide, and trusting they'll speak truth and stay. That's frightening for anyone. It's human to want to keep the mask on. But loneliness is not safety; it's exposure. Growing in Christ is not a solo project. Somewhere between anonymous attendance and genuine friendship is a step you can take—inviting one person deeper, being honest with someone who's earned it, refusing to carry things alone.

For reflection

Do I have even one friend who knows the unedited version of me—and if not, who might I begin to trust?

Pray

Pray for the courage to let one trustworthy person closer than arm's length.

Day 5

"Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour." A lion doesn't charge the strongest of the herd; it waits for the one that has wandered off alone. The sermon connected this directly to community—the danger isn't only the enemy's attack but the isolation that leaves us vulnerable to it. Being alert isn't about living in fear or seeing an enemy behind every hardship. Our struggles and pressures are real, and fear is human. But there's wisdom in noticing when we're drifting to the edges, pulling away from the people who could stand with us. That's usually where devastation gets a foothold—not in one dramatic moment, but in slow, quiet withdrawal. Staying alert, then, looks surprisingly ordinary: staying connected, staying honest, staying near the people who point us back to Jesus. The armor Peter describes isn't a solo suit. It's worn together. Today, alertness might simply mean refusing to isolate when everything in you wants to retreat.

For reflection

Where am I most tempted to isolate right now, and what would staying connected look like this week?

Pray

Ask God for alertness and for the company of others when the pull toward isolation is strong.

Day 6

Here is the heart of the sermon and the model for everything else: Jesus, "who being in the very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to His own advantage." Instead He made Himself nothing, took the nature of a servant, and humbled Himself to death—even death on a cross. This is servant leadership defined not as a title but as a downward motion. Pastor Brad drew a sharp line between status-seeking and responsibility-taking. The world climbs; Christ descended. Humble leadership picks up the towel, shoulders the hard job, and takes responsibility rather than credit. And Paul's command is not to admire this from a distance but to adopt it: "Have the same mindset as Christ Jesus." That's staggering. The King of glory measured greatness by how low He was willing to stoop for people who couldn't repay Him. If that's the pattern, then the way up in God's kingdom is down—into service, into inconvenience, into taking responsibility others avoid. Living this out means using your time, talent, and influence to lift others rather than yourself.

For reflection

Where could I take responsibility or serve someone this week without any expectation of recognition?

Pray

Pray for the mind of Christ—a willingness to go low so others can be lifted.

Day 7

Pastor Brad closed with a courtroom image worth carrying into every ordinary moment: if you were accused tomorrow of being a devoted follower of Jesus, would there be enough evidence in your actions toward others to convict you? Not enough Scripture memorized. Enough evidence—in how you treat people. This week we've walked through Paul's picture of what that evidence looks like: unity without demanding uniformity, love that becomes the currency for truth, deep and honest community, and the humble, self-emptying service Christ modeled all the way to the cross. Every piece points the same direction—outward, toward people, into the actual rooms we walk into. The church is not the building; it's us, carrying Christ into Costco, the office, the highway, the dinner table. The change doesn't wait for a program or a perfect moment. It starts today, in the car, in a text, in the next conversation. Knowing the gospel was never the finish line. Showing it is. And the good news is we don't do it in our own strength—Christ, who humbled Himself for us, now lives in us and moves through us.

For reflection

If someone examined only my actions this week, what would they conclude about who I follow?

Pray

Ask God to make the gospel visible in your ordinary days—starting with one step today.

Small-group discussion guide

For leading a group conversation about this message.

Open

Think about the ordinary places you passed through this week—a store aisle, a desk, a stretch of highway. This message makes the case that the church isn't a building we visit but a people who carry Christ into every one of those rooms.

Discussion questions

1
In Philippians 2:1-2, Paul appeals to encouragement, comfort, shared life in the Spirit, tenderness, and compassion before he asks the church to be like-minded. What does his order suggest about where unity actually comes from?
2
The sermon drew a line between unity and uniformity, pointing to the foot of the cross as common ground. What does it look like for a group of very different people to be united without becoming identical?
3
Paul says that without love, even prophecy, knowledge, and mountain-moving faith amount to nothing. Why might love be the thing that lets a hard truth actually be heard?
4
The message described 'deep-spirited friends' who know the good, bad, and ugly and love us anyway, and warned that isolation often comes before devastation. How can a group like ours make that kind of honest friendship more normal?
5
In Philippians 2:5-8, Jesus lets go of His rightful status and takes the nature of a servant. How does His example reshape what we tend to picture when we hear the word 'leadership'?
6
Pastor Brad offered a courtroom picture—if someone were accused of being a devoted follower of Jesus, would there be enough evidence in how they treat others to convict them? Between you and God this week, where might one ordinary moment become a place to show the gospel and not just know it?

Pray together

Ask God to help us be the church wherever we go this week—carrying His love, humility, and honesty into ordinary rooms and everyday relationships.
